Three-phase system - definition

A three-phase system is a power system consisting of three sinusoidal voltages of equal amplitude and frequency, offset from each other by 120 electrical degrees. This configuration enables the efficient transmission and conversion of electricity, being the standard in commercial power generation, industry and in installations supplying power to high-power equipment.

From a physical point of view, a three-phase system is most often created by rotating the windings of a synchronous generator, spaced uniformly around the stator. The resulting phase voltages can be connected in a star (Y) or triangle (Δ) arrangement, which determines the values of the phase-to-phase voltages and how the loads are connected. In the star system, phase-to-phase and phase-to-neutral (phase-neutral) voltages are available, while in the delta system, only the phase-to-phase voltage is available.

The advantage of the three-phase system is that more power can be transmitted at the same current value than in a single-phase system, as well as a more even load on the Power Cables. It also allows the direct supply of three-phase motors, which have high efficiency, simple design and self-starting without the need for additional staggered phase systems. Three-phase operation reduces power pulsations and simplifies the design of power transformation and conversion equipment.

In power systems and Automation, the three-phase system is the basis for the operation of many electrical machines, converters, inverters and reactive power compensation systems. The analysis of these systems is based on spatial methods, symmetric transforms and analysis of steady states and transients in vector space, which enables effective design and control of advanced power systems.
