Intermediate frequency (IF) - definition

Intermediate frequency (IF) is a fixed-frequency, fixed-frequency signal resulting from the frequency conversion of a received or transmitted signal in radiocommunications equipment such as transmitters and superheterodyne receivers. The use of this technique allows the design of amplification, filtering and demodulation paths to be simplified, as the processing takes place not directly on the frequency of the radio frequency (RF) signal, but on a transformed version of it.

During reception, the RF signal is mixed with the local oscillator signal, resulting in a new signal with a frequency that is the difference between the input frequency and the frequency of the local generator. This new signal - just the intermediate frequency - is then amplified and filtered. This allows uniform intermediate path components to be used, regardless of the input frequency, increasing the flexibility and efficiency of the overall device.

The choice of intermediate frequency value depends on the application and the type of communication system. Different IF bands are often used in radio systems used in practice, selected according to the required selectivity, interference suppression and available components. The use of more than one intermediate frequency - in a so-called double frequency conversion structure - allows even greater selectivity and reduction of mirror interference.

The technique is used in a wide range of devices: from traditional radio receivers, televisions, radar systems to modern wireless communication systems and satellite systems, where stability and precision in signal processing are crucial.
