Superheterodyne - definition

A superheterodyne is a type of radio receiver in which the received high-frequency (RF) signal is converted into a lower, fixed intermediate frequency (IF) signal by means of a frequency mixing process. This circuit allows easier and more precise signal processing due to the fact that most of the amplification, filtering and demodulation operations take place at a fixed frequency, independent of the frequency of the input signal.

The principle of superheterodyne operation is based on the use of a local oscillator, whose signal is mixed with the signal received from the antenna. As a result of the mixing process - i.e. a non-linear multiplication of the signals - new signals are created with frequencies that are the sum and difference of the frequencies of the input signal and the oscillator. From these, an intermediate frequency is selected, which is then amplified and filtered with high selectivity.

The introduction of the intermediate frequency concept allows the use of constant filter and amplifier characteristics independent of the station being received, which significantly improves the stability and quality of reception. In addition, it facilitates the design of multiband receivers while ensuring high sensitivity and selectivity. Superheterodyne has found applications in almost all modern radio, television and radar receivers, as well as in wireless communication systems.

Its design can be extended with additional frequency conversion stages, allowing even more accurate separation of the useful signal from interference and noise. Despite the increasing popularity of digital techniques, the superheterodyne remains the cornerstone of many analogue and hybrid receiving systems due to its proven performance and versatility of operation.
