BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) - definition

BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is the basic input/output system present in personal computers, acting as an intermediary between the hardware and the operating system. BIOS is a set of instructions stored in the non-volatile memory of the motherboard, most commonly in the form of a flash ROM or EEPROM chip, which starts immediately upon powering on the computer.

Its main task is to initialize and test hardware components as part of the POST (Power-On Self Test) procedure, and then load the operating system's boot program from a data storage device. In this context, BIOS is responsible for communication with devices such as the keyboard, hard drive, optical drive, or graphics card at the lowest level. Its functions also include providing an abstraction layer that allows the operating system basic access to hardware even before loading its own drivers.

BIOS also contains a configuration interface known as the Setup Utility, allowing the user to manually set the computer's operating parameters, such as boot priority, RAM parameters, processor clocking, or security settings. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the classic BIOS has been gradually replaced by UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), offering broader functionality, a graphical user interface, and better support for modern technologies such as large hard drives and secure boot.

Although BIOS operates independently of the operating system, its proper functioning is crucial for the stability and functionality of the entire computer. The motherboard manufacturer may provide BIOS updates to improve compatibility, increase performance, or fix bugs.
