Shift current - definition

The Shift Current is a concept introduced by James Clerk Maxwell to supplement the classical equations of electromagnetism so that they conform to the principle of conservation of charge. It denotes the time-varying flux of the electric field, which in alternating-current systems plays a role equivalent to conduction current, although it does not involve the actual movement of charges in a conductor.

Formally, the shift current is described by a term containing the time derivative of the electric field strength. In dielectrics and vacuum, this current corresponds to the change in electric field strength over time, while in the presence of materials with a certain electrical permeability, their influence is also taken into account by appropriate constitutive transformations.

This phenomenon is of particular importance in the analysis of Capacitors in AC circuits. Although no physical conduction current flows between the Capacitors' covers, the alternating electric field in the dielectric causes the existence of a displacement current that completes the continuity of the current lines in the circuit. This allows circuits containing Capacitors to conduct alternating current, although they provide a barrier to direct current.

The recognition of the shift current made it possible to formulate Maxwell's complete equations and predict the existence of electromagnetic waves, which are a self-sustaining system of alternating electric and magnetic fields. Today, the concept of the shift current is used in electromagnetic wave theory, dielectric analysis, antenna technology, as well as in the design of microwave and optoelectronic structures.
