Avalanche Photodiode (APD) is a semiconductor photodetector that utilizes the avalanche ionization phenomenon to detect weak optical radiation. Unlike conventional photodiodes, it allows for internal signal amplification by applying a voltage above the breakdown threshold, leading to a rapid increase in the number of charge carriers due to successive ionizing collisions.
The operating principle is based on the absorption of a photon, which triggers an electron-hole pair in the p-n junction or p-i-n region. The high electric field accelerates the generated electrons, which can collide with atoms in the crystal lattice, generating additional carrier pairs. This process, known as avalanche ionization, results in significant amplification of the photocurrent, allowing for the detection of very weak light intensities.
Due to their high sensitivity and ability to operate at high frequencies, avalanche diodes are used in fiber optic systems, lidars, ionizing radiation detectors, as well as in precise measurement systems and imaging systems. They operate effectively in the spectral range from near infrared to ultraviolet, depending on the semiconductor material used, such as silicon, germanium, or gallium arsenide.
They require precise control of the supply voltage, as a slight exceedance of the breakdown voltage threshold can lead to damage to the component. For this reason, they are often used in configurations with additional stabilization and protection circuits. Despite their complexity, they are a key component in advanced optoelectronics, where high sensitivity and fast response to variable light signals are crucial.
