Simens (S) - definition

Simens (S) is the SI unit of electrical conductivity , which is the inverse of ohm (Ω), the unit of electrical resistance. It denotes the ability of a component or material to conduct electricity. One simens corresponds to the conductivity at which a current of one ampere (A) flows through an element under an applied voltage of one volt (V). Mathematically it is expressed as S = A/V, which reflects the linear relationship between voltage and current in a conductor according to Ohm's law.

In electronic and electrical systems, conductivity measured in simens refers both to the properties of individual elements - such as Resistors, Diodes or Transistors - and to entire materials or structures in which current flows. In the case of materials, conductivity (also known as conductivity) is expressed as the inverse of resistivity and depends on the chemical composition, crystal structure and temperature.

This unit is also applicable in AC circuit analysis, where it is used to describe conductance - the real component of admittance - i.e. the inverse of impedance. Due to its widespread use in electrical engineering, electronics, telecommunications and solid state physics, simens is an important part of the analysis of the behaviour of electrical systems, enabling accurate modelling of charge flow and energy losses.
