SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) is a computational technique used in robotics, Automation and autonomous systems to simultaneously create a map of an unknown environment and determine one's own position in that map. This method allows a device - such as a mobile robot, a drone or an autonomous vehicle - to navigate in a dynamic environment without prior knowledge of its structure, based solely on data from on-board sensors.
The SLAM process is based on the integration of measurement data from different sources such as cameras, lidars, radars, Ultrasonic Sensors or inertial measurement systems. Algorithms analyse these data in real time to estimate the movement trajectory and create a representation of the space, which can take the form of a grid, point cloud or topological map. A key aspect of SLAM is to address the problem of errors accumulating over time, which can lead to significant discrepancies between actual and estimated position. Therefore, the technique often uses probabilistic filtering methods, such as Kalman or particle filters, as well as non-linear optimisation algorithms.
SLAM is used wherever autonomous navigation requires high reliability and precision and the infrastructure GPS is unavailable or insufficient. Systems using this technology are present, among others, in cleaning robots, self-driving vehicles, industrial and exploration solutions, as well as in augmented reality. With SLAM, the device is able to adapt to changing environmental conditions, avoid obstacles and make navigation decisions autonomously and safely.
