Transil - definition

Transil (Transient Voltage Suppressor, TVS) is a semiconductor protective element used to protect electronic circuits from short high energy overvoltages, originating e.g. from electrostatic discharge (ESD), pulses induced by switching inductive loads, atmospheric phenomena or electromagnetic interference. It works on the principle of a rapid change of conduction state in response to exceeding a threshold voltage, allowing excess energy to be dissipated to ground or the power line, protecting sensitive circuit components.

The transil is based on p-n junction with avalanche characteristics, which allows it to respond very quickly - response times on the order of picoseconds - and the ability to conduct large surge currents without permanent damage. In its normal state, it behaves like a very high resistance element, without affecting the operation of the protected circuit. Only when the voltage exceeds a certain threshold value (terminal voltage) does it enter the conduction state, limiting further voltage increase.

Transil-type elements are available in unidirectional and bidirectional versions, allowing them to be used in both DC and AC powered systems. Depending on their design, they can be surface-mounted (SMD) or through-hole (THT), and their parameters - such as clamping voltage, maximum surge current, capacitance and absorbed energy - are selected depending on the nature of the hazard and the type of system being protected. Transils are commonly used in communication Interfaces, data lines, power systems, as well as in industrial, automotive and consumer equipment, where they provide reliable operation in the presence of surge noise.
