Power amplifier is an electronic device or circuit designed to increase the power of an electrical signal so that it, so that it is capable of driving loads of relatively high impedance and power requirements, such as loudspeakers, electro-acoustic transducers, heating Elements, motors or antenna systems. A power amplifier does not change the content of the signal, but provides the appropriate level of energy required for its effective use in the final stage of the signal path.
The primary purpose of a power amplifier is to convert a low-voltage input signal - usually provided by a preamplifier or signal source - into a signal with a higher voltage, current, or both, while maintaining the highest possible fidelity of the original waveform. Energy efficiency, gain linearity, bandwidth and limitation of distortion are key design criteria. An important aspect is also the conversion efficiency, depending on the operating class of the amplifier (e.g. A, B, AB, D), which affects energy consumption, heat emission and system size.
Power amplifiers are used in many areas: from public address systems, where they power speakers in concert halls and cinemas, to laboratory equipment, medical equipment, radio transmitters and industrial control systems. Their construction can be based on discrete components, bipolar transistors, MOSFETS-ach, integrated circuits, or electron tubes - depending on the application requirements and the operating environment.
An important design element is also the cooling system, to dissipate the heat generated during operation, especially in the case of high-power amplifiers. Parameters such as output power, load impedance, coefficient damping factor, frequency response or total harmonic distortion (THD) are used to assess the quality and suitability of a power amplifier for a specific technical application.
