One of the most common modifications drivers are making, is the replacement or modification of car audio systems . The reason for this could be an unsatisfactory HiFi system installed by the car manufacturer, the lack of a sound system (less commonly), or simply wear and tear. Due to working in harsh conditions (vibrations, shocks) , car speakers are susceptible to mechanical damage.
Car speakers include several product groups that serve to improve the acoustic performance and sound quality in the car. These include the basic components of a car audio system, as well as mounting accessories. These products are dedicated to both car enthusiasts modifying their cars and professional workshops specialising in custom car audio installations.
Car speakers, like HiFi speakers, are rated in terms of how much power they can handle. The basic models are: tweeter (suitable for high frequencies like cymbals), midrange (middle frequencies in the range of human voice, e.g., vocals), and woofer (designed to reproduce low-pitched audio frequencies. e.g., bass guitar). A broadband speaker will be adapted to the widest possible frequency range – but at the expense of overall quality. An intermediate solution is to use high-quality two-way car speakers, i.e., designed for low and medium or medium and high frequencies – for this purpose they incorporate two separate membranes.
The best effect is achieved by using high-quality crossovers (filter systems dividing the audio signal into low, medium, and high frequency ranges) and a set of 6 speakers (three for each stereo channel). Since the human ear cannot distinguish the direction of bass and woofers are big (their installation in the car can be troublesome), a channel combiner, an additional amplifier, and a single, dedicated woofer speaker are often used. A car sound system in this configuration (2+2+1) is the most preferred solution – as it allows for satisfactory results while minimising the space needed.
When buying car speakers, attention should be paid to at least two mechanical and electrical parameters. The first, of course, will be the size. Please note that the vast majority of cars (even If your vehicle does not have an audio system) have door speaker slots. Choosing a unit that is not suitable for a given car may involve the necessity to interfere with the structural elements of the vehicle, resulting in reduced rigidity and even compromising passenger safety. It is equally important to match car audio amplifiers to speakers. If your car is not equipped with an automotive external amplifier, this limitation will be imposed by the radio parameters.
"Aftermarket" loudspeakers (i.e., not dedicated to a specific car model) come in standard diameters and are fitted with standardised mounting holes. However, car manufacturers often use non-standard solutions, making it difficult to fit replacement audio components. This is where several suppliers offering assembly accessoriescome to the rescue. These include speaker frames and spacers. In both cases, the purpose is the same: these are adapters allowing a standard speaker to be fitted to a specific vehicle model. The car make and model, as well as the diameter of the speaker, are usually listed in the product specification. Usually, these parts are made of MDF or plastic, and all you need to assemble them is a spanner, screwdriver, and possibly a screwdriver. The latter will be required because not all frames have prefabricated mounting holes.
As already mentioned, one of the most effective ways to improve the capability of a sound system is to isolate the bass track and play it through a dedicated speaker, or subwoofer. There are three issues involved: firstly, such a speaker is relatively large in size (up to 30cm in diameter); secondly, it requires the use of a dedicated boxto bring out the low acoustic frequencies; thirdly, car manufacturers rarely include space for such a speaker in their designs (opting instead for specially designed units that fit into the doors or into the rear parcel shelf. If the car owner decides to add an additional woofer, they should consider using a special enclosure. These are wooden boxes covered with upholstery that perfectly fits the boot area. The TME catalogue offers not only universal enclosures, but also enclosures made for specific car models. In this case, the products are factory profiled to match the curves of the car. As a result, they ensure the maximum net volume, with only a slight effect on the load capacity of the luggage compartment.
Theacoustic accessories include foams, mats, and fabrics, which have three functions. First, they reduce buzz from the speaker cone. This eliminates unpleasant, "tinny" sound. Secondly, these materials reduce the interior and exterior noise of vehicles, which results in a more comfortable driving experience and improves your car audio experience. The third function is purely aesthetic and is mainly related to upholstery fabrics. These products are used for custom speaker systems (e.g. resonance boxes), as well as custom interior elements (additional compartments, slots, etc.). Here, the user can choose classic fabrics to match the car upholstery or eye-catching colour combinations. Fortunately, in this respect, we are limited only by our imagination...
