Thermistors are a particular kind of resistors: their resistance relies mostly on temperature. There are two main types of thermistors: NTC and PTC. NTC thermistors lower their resistance as temperature rises while PTC thermistors operate in the opposite way – increasing resistance with rising temperature. The semiconductors in thermistors are made by sintering semiconducting and binding materials. In NTC thermistors, those are usually metal oxides – nickel, cobalt, manganese, or iron oxides – while PTC thermistors are usually based on vanadium and titanium oxides. NTC thermistors are used in temperature measurement and regulation systems, inrush current limiting systems, circuits with transformers, and time delay modules. Conversely, PTC thermistors are used in overcurrent protection systems (e.g. in electric motors), demagnetisation circuits, and as heating components in the automotive industry.
TME distributes NTC thermistors from renowned manufacturers. When selecting thermistors, you should primarily pay attention to their resistance. This value ranges from 1kΩ to 100kΩ. However, we should also mention that nominal resistance is given for a temperature of 25°C (R25). Our search engine lets you filter available items by maximum power (also for the temperature of 25°C), operating temperature, body dimensions, and cable length. Transfer Multisort Elektronik, an electronics wholesaler, offers components from well-known manufacturers, including Ascon Technologic, TDK and Honeywell.
