Wiring ducts, also known as cable ducts or trays, are used for mechanical protection of electrical and signal cables, as well as other telecommunication and IT infrastructure. The use of cable trays reduces the costs of installation (e.g. eliminates the need to make grooves), improves the looks of interiors and helps to better organise the cabling. They are also used to make temporary connections, e.g. during renovation works. What is more, wiring ducts may prove indispensable when performing works in historic buildings that are subject to official supervision of a conservation officer – the law in most countries prohibits penetrating walls of the objects of architectural heritage protection.
Due to the diversity of solutions available in this product category, we can distinguish three groups of wiring ducts and related accessories.
As the name suggests, these types of products are used to lead cables along vertical surfaces of the building. Ducts usually consist of two elements – base (the part fixed to the wall/floor with screws or self-adhesive tape) and a push-mounted cover. An unquestionable advantage of such a solution is a facilitated access to cabling, allowing for easy scaling, modification and maintenance of the installation. A skirting duct usually protects cables in places where they would be exposed to mechanical damage resulting from how the rooms are used (warehouses, storerooms, workshops, busy corridors). It is also a neat solution, which will match the interior design in modern office buildings. It should be noted here that each duct system also includes a number of connectors (L-shaped, T-shaped, etc.) and other compatible accessories.
A half-round strip placed on the floor protects cables against vertical pressure (transport trolley wheels, trampling, etc.). These cable protectors are often indispensable, both for temporary and permanent installations. They make it possible, for example, to connect power and telecommunications networks to desks which are at a distance from the wall or to protect cables laid during renovation works.
Slotted ducts, also known as finger ducts, have a slightly different application. These trunkings are often placed in offices and staff rooms or under worktops, where they are used to organise cables. This prevents cables from tangling and reduces the risk of cable breakage, for example by accidentally getting your foot caught in them. This type of product is widely used in cabinets and switchboards, where it keeps the installation neatly organised and improves the safety of maintenance works. Like in the case of wiring ducts described above, slotted ducts are also used as a temporary safety measure when carrying out technical works.
