DC generator - definition

A D.C. Generator is an electrical machine that converts mechanical energy into unidirectional electrical energy, i.e. direct current. Its basic principle of operation is based on the law of electromagnetic induction, according to which a moving conductor in a magnetic field crosses the lines of force of the field, resulting in an electromotive force. In the case of DC generators, special designs are used that allow a voltage of constant polarity to be obtained despite the rotating nature of the device's operation.

The basic structural components of a DC alternator are: rotor with armature windings, stator generating a magnetic field (often by means of Solenoids or permanent magnets) and commutator - a mechanical rectifier built from copper segments and brushes carbon brushes. It is the commutator, rotating with the rotor, that changes the polarity of the voltage induced in the armature windings in such a way as to produce a DC voltage at the output of the machine.

Depending on the method of excitation, DC generators are divided into independently excited, shunt, series and compound winding. Others of these types each have different control and dynamic characteristics, which determines their suitability for different applications. These types of generators were widely used in the first electricity systems before being displaced by the more efficient alternators and rectifier systems.

Today, DC generators are mainly used in niche areas such as small-scale power plants, variable speed drive systems, emergency power systems and some laboratory applications. They have the advantage of simplicity of output voltage regulation and the ability to directly supply consumers requiring DC voltage without the need for additional converters.
