An electric discharge is the process of dynamic flow of electric charges through a dielectric or gas, leading to instantaneous electrical conductivity in a normally insulating medium. The phenomenon occurs when the intensity of the electric field exceeds the critical value for the medium, causing dielectric breakdown and initiation of current flow. The discharge mechanism involves the generation and acceleration of charge carriers such as electrons and ions, leading to an exponential increase in conductivity through the processes of collisional ionisation and secondary emission.
Depending on the characteristics of the current, voltage and properties of the medium, electrical discharges can take various forms, including corona, spark, arc and piercing discharges. Spark discharge, occurring in gases, is a fast, short-lived process that generates strong electromagnetic and light pulses. Arc discharge, which is stable in nature, is used in welding and plasma cutting technologies and in high-current switches.
In electrical power systems, electrical discharges are important for both utility and protection aspects. Designing insulation high voltage, lightning protection devices and surge protection requires detailed modelling of the discharge and consideration of parameters such as breakdown voltage, rise time current and radiated emission characteristics. In modern scientific research, electrical discharges are also analysed in the context of applications low-temperature plasma, gas and surface cleaning technologies, as well as in atmospheric physics experiments such as modelling lightning discharges and their effects on the Earth's electromagnetic environment.
